Early on, Nikola worked as the nightlife photographer for Gawker Media to document parties and events in New York City. But where most nightlife photographers simply catalogue attendees with rows and rows of repetitive, posed photos, Nikola captured the energy of each event. That's what I noticed first about his work. He captured the melancholy, the pretension, and the awkwardness in these parties, as well as the joy and enthusiasm. Drunken belligerence. Lust. I found myself looking at his nightlife photos not as an insider's glimpse into some event I didn't care about, but as contemporary portraits of nightlife culture. Nikola has a gift for capturing social dynamics and an individual's interior state.
