/Achille Devéria
A watercolor
Achille Devéria was a successful nineteenth-century artist and illustrator, and worked primarily in watercolor. In 1849, Devéria was appointed director of the Bibliothèque Nationale's department of engravings and assistant curator of the Louvre's Egyptian department.
The artist is best known for his portraits of artists and writers, which the French poet and critic Charles Baudelaire once said reflected "all the morals and aesthetics of the age." It's a particularly evocative statement in light of the watercolor represented here.
