This strange painting of Gabrielle d'Estrées and One of Her Sisters dates to c.1594, by an unknown painter of the school of Fontainebleau. Gabrielle d'Estrées was one of Henry IV's mistresses, and it's believed that this curious gesture is an allusion to Gabrielle's pregnancy with the king's illegitimate son. In the background, a woman is sewing, possibly in preparation for the arrival of the child.
