A legend whose influence is felt in nearly every reach of modern dance today, Graham was an innovator. Her sexually explicit work "Phaedra" was condemned by the House of Representatives as being pornographic in 1962.

The one sentence I remember most clearly from Martha Graham's biography was: "She was a fabulous dancer; she danced from her vagina." It was an axiom she encouraged all her dancers to abide by.
